We are looking for someone with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Business or Public Administration and six years of business operations experience. It is highly desirable that you have an AZA Professional Fellow membership but that can be obtained after you start. We will also consider a combination of education and experience. Under general supervision, assists the Zoo Director with administrative and management duties, daily operations, and facilities and grounds maintenance functions; assists in managing a diverse collection of native and exotic animals and the technical staff that cares for them.

 

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

• Assists the Zoo Director, as directed, in:

 

• Supervision of personnel

• Preparation of annual budgets and capital plans

• Representation of Zoo at City Committee, City Council meetings

• Representation of Zoo at various conferences and seminars

• Response to requests for information or complaints from elected officials, other City staff,

and the public.

• Serves as second in command, in case Zoo Director is unavailable

• Participation in Citywide planning activities and inter-departmental work groups

• Preparation of materials and attendance of City Council and Council committee meetings

for the purpose of representing the Zoo Department

 

• Assists in directing Zoo programs, including animal care and management, permitting, purchasing, facilities and grounds maintenance, safety and security programs and exhibit design and maintenance.

• Manages guest services program, including customer service training, emergency procedures, and procurement approvals.

• Exercises independent judgment within broad policy guidelines; interprets concerns, defines desired results and determines scope and priorities of programs and special projects; encourages new ideas and collaborative approaches to solving problems.

• Manages Zoo safety and emergency management programs; assures that operations meet state compliance regulations, City and board goals, and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accreditation standards and practices.

• Directs operations, evaluates and analyzes issues and recommends and implements solutions; develops Zoo plans, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.

• Manages Zoo staff; prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; trains and evaluates staff; develops staff skills and conducts performance evaluations; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues; reviews the work of assigned staff to assure the work quality and timely accomplishment of assigned duties and responsibilities.

• Coordinates plans and operations with external partners and other public and private agencies.

• Monitors and reviews trends in Zoo operations and management issues; researches and identifies development opportunities; recommends operational, procedural and policy improvements.

• Supports the relationship between the City of Waco, the Zoological Society, and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

• May be required to respond afterhours, including holidays and weekends, in the event of a departmental or City wide emergency.

• Driving is essential.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED:

 

• Bachelor’s degree in Science, Business, or Public Administration

• Six years’ business operations experience;

• OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.

 

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

 

• AZA Professional Fellow membership is preferred.

 

Physical Demands

 

Medium Work:

 

• Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

• Required to physically work with wild animals.
