GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Provide mental health counseling for McLennan Community College and University Center students. Present outreach and educational programs to faculty/staff/students. This position exercises no supervision and receives general supervision from the Director, Counseling Center. NOTE:  This is a security sensitive position and an appropriate background investigation will be made on applicants being strongly considered for this position.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a counseling related field.

Experience: More than one year of professional work experience.

Special Requirements: Licensed by the State of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate (LPC-Associate), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist-Associate (LMFT-Associate), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or LMSW undergoing clinical supervision (pursuing LCSW).  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: Two years of professional experience in a clinical setting. Previous work experience in a community college or university setting. Previous work experience in working mental health crises or trauma.  

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Knowledge of:  Both theoretical and practical understanding of the following: 1. Clinical work experience with a broad range of mental health issues, including crisis and trauma 2. Stressors affecting college students and counseling techniques to address these stressors. 3. Appropriate procedures to follow for students exhibiting a danger to themselves or others. 4. HIPAA and FERPA laws associated with mental health counseling. 5. Community mental health resources. Skills in: 6. Proficiency with software applications such as Microsoft Office, Datatel, Pharos360, Mongoose, JotForm, and presentation design tools (Prezi, Canva, etc.). 7. Effective program development, marketing, and evaluation. 8. Effective methods and techniques of mental health counseling. 9. Counseling skills, including but not limited to active listening, exhibiting positive emotional authenticity, calmness under pressure, empathy, understanding toward students, self-awareness, and multicultural competency. 10. Effective and persuasive presentation techniques, especially with regards to presenting sensitive topics such as suicide prevention and self-care topics. 11. Mediation and conflict resolution Ability to: 12. Apply effective counseling techniques for a wide range of mental health issues including crisis counseling. 13. Interact with students who are potentially of harm to self or others to maintain individual and campus safety. 14. Effectively provide educational training for faculty/staff/students including suicide prevention and stress management training. 15. Maintain accurate and timely records in accordance with Federal, State and MCC requirements. 16. Understand and comply with MCC & Counseling Center’s policies and procedures. 17. Organize and prioritize work assignments.  

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Sedentary-Desk work; occasional field trips e.g. for college or program activities. Minimal Hazard/Exposure-Standard office setting.  At least minimal environmental controls are in place to assure health and comfort.
