We best serve our students, colleagues, and community when we work as a team.   GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this position is to coordinate all federal and state veteran’s benefits for active duty, veterans, and military dependents. This position also coordinates activities with other departments and divisions, other colleges, as well as outside organizations. This position offers highly responsible staff support to the Assistant Director of Financial Aid. This position receives general direction from the Assistant Director of Financial Aid and exercises no supervision. NOTE:  This is a security sensitive position and an appropriate background investigation will be made on applicants being strongly considered for this position.   MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Three or more years of professional experience in Financial Aid or Higher Education. Special Requirements: Special consideration will be given to applicants with Veteran Status.   SELECTION CRITERIA: Knowledge of: 1. Students’ rights, responsibilities, and obligations regarding financial aid and veteran’s services. 2. Microcomputers and various software programs. 3. Modern office practice and procedures. 4. Record keeping and reporting procedures. 5. Principles regarding effective public relations. 6. Understanding of US Department of VA (DVA) Education benefits, guidelines, and qualifications necessary for eligibility. 7. Process for providing academic advising to veteran students. 8. Enrollment process for disabled veterans under the Voc. Rehab program. Skills in: 9. Organization and time management with exceptional attention to detail. 10. Counseling pertaining to Veteran Programs. 11. Compliance with federal and state veteran’s affairs regulations. Ability to: 12. Maintain confidentiality of work-related information and material. 13. Understand and interpret technical and government documents. 14. Effectively resolve issues pertaining to students in difficult situations 15. Interpret and apply federal, state, and college policies, procedures, college catalog, schedule timeline, policies, and objectives. 16. Laws and regulations as applied to financial aid and veteran’s programs.17. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 18. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 19. Perform a variety of tasks related to the certification process of student applications for veteran educational benefits in accordance with VA guidelines. 20. Work independently or as a member of a team, while productively engaging with others at varying levels of seniority.   WORKING CONDITIONS: Minimal Hazard/Exposure-Standard office setting.  At least minimal environmental controls are in place to assure health and comfort.
